Watercolor Class Supply List

If you already have your own materials, you're welcome to use those for class. It is not necessary to use the exact materials as I do. Feel free to supplement the list as you desire.

Here is a list of the basics you'll need for class:

  • Palette
    • Any style, white, plastic or porcelain. I use this plastic airtight palette for class.

  • Paint
    • The following is a suggested basic range of colors:
      • Cool red (i.e. Quinacridone Rose)
      • Warm red (i.e. Pyrrol Scarlet)
      • Cool yellow (i.e. Hansa Yellow Light or Medium)
      • Warm yellow (i.e. New Gamboge or Guinacridone Gold)
      • Cool blue (Phthalo Blue)
      • Warm blue (i.e. Ultramarine Blue)
      • Some earth colors (i.e. Raw Sienna or Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, and Raw Umber)
    • If you are looking for artist quality brands (and there are many), Da Vinci and Daniel Smith are both great. The Daniel Smith Essentials Watercolor Set is a great starter set that allows a wide range of colors to be mixed.

  • Brushes
    • Synthetic or sable, any brand.
    • I suggest at least having 3 different sizes of brushes: a Flat Wash 3/4-inch or 1-inch, a Round #8 or #10, and a Round #6 or smaller.
    • I use the Artegria brush set (which has 10 brushes in a variety of sizes), Princeton Heritage/Velvetouch/Neptune brushes, and generic hake brushes.

  • Watercolor paper
    • 9x12-inch or larger,100% cotton,140lb/300gsm, cold press paper.
    • I highly recommend either Baohong or Arches. Cheap watercolor paper behaves very differently.
    • Paper comes in sheets, pads, and blocks - any of these options work.
    • If you're using paper sheets or pads, bring tape and a board to mount your paper, such as a sketch board or plastic cutting board.

  • Pencil
    • Either B or 2B, any brand.

  • Kneaded Eraser
    • I use a Faber-Castell kneaded eraser

  • Sketchbook
